Toyota Suspend Production in North America

Toyota Motor Company will halt production at all factories in North America due to lack of spare parts caused the Japanese earthquake on 11 March, according to the Toyota Canada announced on Friday.

Toyota also decided to close temporarily 13 of the 14 factories in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, the component factory in Missouri will continue to operate. This temporarily closure will decrease the production as many as 35,000 units of cars.

Over the the coming weeks, Toyota plants in North America will operate with a reduced schedule. Production halted on December 15, 18, 21, 22, and 25 April. Most of the factory machinery and components in North America will also follow the same schedule.

On days of non-production, the company will continue to provide employment for about 25,000 regular team members in North America. On average, about 85 percent of components and materials for all 12 plants in North America and Toyota's Lexus models sourced from 500 suppliers in the continent.
